Captain’s Starlog Date: April 23, Mr. Brick Wrote this Noteworthy Blog That He wants You To Share
Ha! That is one of my go-to phrases whenever I want to make a mental note and have fun with someone to let them know what they just said was very important to me. It also is a tip of the hat wave to one of my all-time favorite TV series, Star Trek.
What, you’re just now discovering that Mr. Brick is a Bit o’Nerd? What took you so long?LOL
Being a nerd and trying to be funny is either a recipe for a really bad date or someone who will be there for you in the thick and thin of times and will always make you laugh. I like to think I qualify for the later of the two. Nerdiness is also a synonym for detail-oriented. Well, not officially, but who is going to list, “nerd” as a skill on their resume when you can impress the crap out of them by using the hyphenated word, “detail-oriented.” Same thing.
nerd detail-oriented person is one trait that makes a person a really good manager to help others. You take copious notes and you think ahead of what you want to do. You don’t just have a plan B, you also have a plan C, D, and E!
Emotional Banking for A Rainy Day
That thinking ahead is what I call Emotional Banking. I wrote an entire blog post about Emotional Banking your way to Success. When you work for others you want to be able to be on your A-game 24/7. Let’s face it. None of us are. So luckily you have taken great notes to get you back on track. If that doesn’t work, you can always go to the emotional bank and make a withdraw. It’ll serve you well as it did for me for the 25+ years in Hollywood when I was a manager and agent to some of the
biggest pain in the ass, I mean… Hollywood celebrities!
I am joking, of course, about it being a pain. I truly loved every day of it and enjoyed serving all of my clients. Sometimes I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. What could be so terrible about flying around the world in private jets or sitting in back, behind the tinted windows of a limousine, strolling down Sunset Blvd? I’m not one who really ever wanted the limelight. I enjoy being the 2nd fiddle… It was never about me, it was always about keeping the focus and media attention on my clients. I mean, that’s why I was in demand. They loved that I was never trying to steal their spotlight. It doesn’t mean that I don’t value myself, it does mean that I am secure enough to not need the attention.
Many times when I was in Hollywood I had people asked if they could shadow me for the day. I guess my life seemed pretty cool to them. At the end of the day, they were like, Mr. Brick, I could never do what you do. Trying to juggle lots of different personalities is a skill. But, if you take good notes and have put some personality invested with your clients, it’s the easiest job in the world.
It’s a learnable skill. In my new online course, MYOB, I teach people how to Manage Your Own Business.
Try it. You’ll like it!
