Well for the second time in as many years I am putting my life, and what I want to do on hold to help someone with a greater need than mine. Will I complain, and gripe while doing it? probably. But when all is said and done, I do know it is the right thing to do, so I will try to keep my whining down to a minimum.
Sometimes we think the key to happiness is doing what we want to do, so no matter what, we never deviate from our original plans. But if we are truly listening to God sometimes he has a Plan B for our life. Sometimes, we can hear him quietly whispering the needs of others into our self-centered ear lobes. We all have the opportunity to listen to that small voice and help others or to swat it away like an annoying fly at a picnic. Mostly we do ignore it and just do what we want to do anyway. Truth be told, that is what I normally do. But I’m tired of God slapping me upside the head when I don’t get the memo. He doesn’t always want me to stay on my own little path to happiness. He wants me to veer off and trust him. So, this time I am trusting his off-the-beaten-path and putting my goals and dreams on hold, and I feel really good about it.
Here are my two favorite quotes on happiness:
Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.
– Eleanor Roosevelt
Joy can be real only if people look upon their life as a service and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness.
– Leo Tolstoy
I am not sure how this will help me get to my dreams, but I am happy to be helping someone else in such a monumental way just the same. Stay tuned to see what happens.
