This morning I went to my favorite restaurant to catch up with an old friend from high school who was passing through town. We spent a short time talking about the good old days and then he was telling me what he has been doing since graduation and I did the same. I was especially chit-chatty about the new series of children’s books I have recently written. I enjoy talking about these books because I think they are some of my best work yet. But as much as I really enjoy hearing myself talk, (I really do), I also enjoy what was staring at me…no, not my male friend, Hello? Sorry, Mr. Brick doesn’t roll that way. No, and I am not talking about the two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun… however, before I could sink my teeth into that lit bit of heaven, a very nice woman who was staring at me, came up to me.
She apologized for interrupting me, but she said she had overheard my conversation about my children’s books and handed me a business card. It turns out she is in the publishing business as an independent sales rep. She wrote down the name of a very reputable publisher of children’s books and suggested I submit my new written children picture books to the publisher.
I thought that was very thoughtful of her. This kind woman doesn’t know me, she hasn’t read my books (yet)…but she knows the sound of a good story when she overhears it. Talking about paying it forward. It was very nice seeing my friend again, but it was also nice that a complete stranger offered to help make one of my dreams come true. Needless to say, I was very excited to get home and get the book proposal sent off.
That was the second time this week, that by talking about what I am doing, someone has stepped up to the plate and offered to help. Just a few days ago I was telling another friend about finally finishing a long overdue novel that I had been writing. When I explained a little bit about the plot he asked if I had thought about the possibility of turning it into a television series. (Well, yah I had, but then again I had also thought about winning the lottery, but that has never happened either.) He asked for me to send an email with a little more about the story. So I quickly drafted a treatment. He emailed me back and said that he thought it was a solid idea and that he will get back to me next week about it.
Who knows what will happen on either of the two projects from here. I will keep you posted! Oh, and for all you McDonald’s haters out there – take this blog and put it in your pipe and smoke it!
Have a great day!
