Water for Elephants

There was a posting on my Facebook wall today from fitness guru Jillian Michaels. Jillian was trying to get support in her role as a PETA supporter to go to the Staples Center to help her demonstrate against the use of sick animals in the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Ever since Jillian was bought to my attention about a year ago (I don’t watch Biggest Loser – so I had never heard of her) I liked what she was doing to help others. I think in general she is a good person. But that is what happens with celebrities sometimes. They get a bit of notoriety then all of a sudden they get a bug up their ass that they plan on solving the world’s problems.

PETA People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is the most well know animal rights advocacy group. For years they have been picking on the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus claiming the circus abuses their animals. Nothing could be further from the truth! I know I have been there they have not!

When I was younger.. Ok, in what seems like an entire lifetime ago I had the honor of working for the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. I did not work as an animal trainer, I was a clown. But I certainly was around the animals 24/7.  I can say with all certainty that there are no better animal owners and animal lovers than the people who are involved with the circus. Anyone who works with the circus does so out of a love for what they do. The hours are long and the work is hard but they do it for the applause – for the roar and approval of the crowd.  It is why Brad Pitt or his wife Angelina Jole make movies. They do it for the applause and for the approval – but luckily they also get paid millions of dollars for doing what they love. It should be noted that the circus was here long before motion pictures were. Just saying!

The people who train and work with the animals in the circus love them as if they were their children. They do not abuse them or overwork them. But by making outlandish claims like PETA does it allows their cause to be the lead story on the evening news at every city Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus plays in. That would be like if children advocacy groups would picket every film or TV production that used minors. The minors, like the animals in the circus, are not being exploited they are just being used as  a party of the story line.

To the members of PETA — I say get a life! To Jillian Michaels, I say go back to helping fat people get skinny.

Have a great day!
